Diving and snorkelling in Madagascar: the top spots
Madagascar is famous for its forests, but its coastline is just as rich. Warm, clear water, healthy reefs and big marine life make it a fine destination for diving and snorkelling.
The northwest: Nosy Be
The islands around Nosy Be are the most developed dive area, with reefs full of turtles, rays and reef fish, and seasonal visits from gentle whale sharks between October and December. The protected marine park of Nosy Tanikely is superb even for snorkellers straight off the beach.
The southwest reefs
Near Tulear at the end of the RN7, the reefs off Ifaty and Anakao sit along one of the longest coral systems in the Indian Ocean. Calm lagoons make easy snorkelling, while outer reefs reward divers with bigger fish and good visibility.
When to go
The dry season, roughly May to November, brings the clearest water and calmest seas. Whale sharks peak in late year off Nosy Be, and humpback whales pass the east coast in the southern winter. Combine reef time with a wildlife route for the best of both worlds.
