Whale watching in Madagascar: where and when
Between July and September, thousands of humpback whales migrate to the warm waters off Madagascar to breed and calve. Watching them breach and sing is a highlight of any trip timed to the season.
Ile Sainte-Marie, the whale capital
The waters around Ile Sainte-Marie, off the east coast, are the most famous spot in Madagascar for humpbacks. Boats head out to watch mothers with calves, breaching adults and competitive groups of males. With a hydrophone you can sometimes hear the males singing beneath the surface.
Other places to see whales
Humpbacks also pass the bay of Antongil near Maroantsetra and, less reliably, the north around Nosy Be. Whatever the location, choose operators who follow responsible viewing distances, which is something we always arrange.
When to go
