Driving the RN7: Madagascar's greatest road trip
The RN7 runs from Antananarivo in the central highlands all the way to Tulear on the south coast. It is the most varied and rewarding overland route in Madagascar, and a journey in its own right.
Why the RN7 is special
In a single road you pass terraced rice paddies, highland market towns, montane rainforest, vast sandstone canyons and finally tropical beaches. It is paved for most of its length, which makes it comfortable, and the constant change of scenery means you are never bored. With a driver-guide you simply watch it unfold.
Highlights along the way
Antsirabe, a faded spa town full of colourful rickshaws. Ambositra, the heart of Malagasy woodcarving. Ranomafana and Isalo, for golden bamboo lemurs and canyon hikes. Anja Reserve for close ring-tailed lemurs. And the spiny forest and reefs around Ifaty at the end.
How long to allow
You can drive the core route in about a week, but ten days to two weeks lets you stop properly at the parks and slow down. Many travellers combine it with a flight to the baobabs or the north afterwards. See it within our two-week itinerary.
