Andasibe National Park: indri, night walks and rainforest
Andasibe-Mantadia is the most accessible rainforest park in Madagascar and a highlight of almost every trip. It is the best place to meet the indri, the largest living lemur.
Meeting the indri
The indri's eerie, whale-like song rings through the forest in the morning and carries for kilometres as families mark their territory. Hearing it, then walking up to a group feeding in the canopy, is unforgettable. Andasibe also holds diademed sifaka, brown lemurs and bamboo lemurs.
Night walks
After dark, the reserve edges come alive. Guided night walks pick out mouse lemurs, sleeping chameleons, leaf-tailed geckos and frogs in the torchlight. It is one of the easiest and most rewarding night-wildlife experiences in the country, and a firm favourite with families.
How to visit
Andasibe is about three to four hours by road east of Antananarivo, which makes it a natural first or last stop on a trip. A day and a half lets you do a morning forest walk, a night walk and the nearby private reserves. It pairs well with the RN7 route south or a continuation toward the east coast and the whales of Ile Sainte-Marie.
